A Milwaukee, Wisconsin Alderman is seeking to limit the sales of a controversial alcoholic beverage being marketed by Pabst Brewing Company and rapper Snoop Dogg.
Alderman Joe Davis, Sr. and the city of Milwaukee Youth Council are sponsoring legislation that goes to Council's Judiciary and Legislation Committee on Monday (July 18th), seeking to limit the sales and marketing of the drink in the city of Milwaukee.
Alderman Davis contends that the beverage is designed to encourage binge drinking, with its brightly colored 23.5 ounce cans, along with the marketing practices that are specifically targeting the Hip-Hop community.
According to stats provided by Alderman Davis, the National Institute of Health said that consumption of just one can of Pabst Blast within a two-hour period could raise blood levels to .08%, which is usually higher than the legal limit in most states.
“National studies show that young people are much more likely to engage in risky and potentially harmful behaviors such as driving while intoxicated and unprotected sex when they’re engaged in binge drinking,” Alderman Davis said.
Zach Komes, president of the Youth Council, said the Council and the Mayor need to ensure that Milwaukee's youths were not “targeted by Pabst.”
“It’s time for Milwaukee’s youth and elected officials to hold Pabst and other brewing companies responsible for targeting under-age persons through product
marketing, flavoring and advertising,” said Mr. Komes, a senior-to-be at Rufus King High School.
At press time over 18 states are attempting to ban the drink from being marketed to underage consumers.
